F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua has been recognized for the ninth year in a row by the American Heart Association with the Get With The Guidelines – Stroke GoldPlus quality achievement award. This recognition highlights the hospital’s ongoing commitment to following nationally recognized, research-based guidelines to ensure stroke patients receive appropriate treatment.
Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. It occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or interrupted, causing brain cells to die due to lack of oxygen and nutrients. Timely detection and treatment are crucial for improving survival rates and reducing long-term effects.
The Get With The Guidelines – Stroke program is designed to help hospitals consistently apply evidence-based practices for stroke care. According to Alice Taylor, Thompson Health Quality Assurance Stroke/Sepsis Coordinator, “Thompson is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines. Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which studies show can help patients recover better. The end goal is to ensure more people in our service area can experience longer, healthier lives.”
Hospitals participating in this program must demonstrate their dedication by meeting certain standards each year and educating patients about managing their health after discharge.
Thompson Hospital also received two additional honors from the American Heart Association: the Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite award, which recognizes efforts to reduce time between patient arrival and treatment; and the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award, given for providing up-to-date care for stroke patients with Type 2 diabetes who face higher risks of complications.
F.F. Thompson Hospital operates as an affiliate of UR Medicine and holds designation as a Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health.
