Cayuga County Health Department - Cayuga County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

273

The Cayuga County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program would like to remind you of the importance of handwashing!

Lead can be found inside and outside the home. The most common source of exposure is from lead-based paint, which was used in many homes built before 1978.  When this older paint begins to crack and chip, lead dust is created.  Children and adults can be exposed to lead poisoning by swallowing or breathing in this dust.

Small children are most at risk of lead poisoning. Lead dust that settles throughout the home can easily find its way into the mouths of little ones.  Putting their hands, toys or other objects in their mouths is developmentally appropriate and if hands and objects are dirty with lead dust, there is risk of toxicity.

One simple step that you can take to prevent your child from being exposed to lead in your home/environment is to wash your child’s hands frequently before eating, after playing outside or on the floor, and before sleeping…and don’t forget to wash toys, bottles, pacifiers, and any other items your child often puts in his or her mouth!

If you have any questions or concerns about lead poisoning or potential lead risks in your home, please call the Cayuga County Health Department at (315) 253-1560 or visit our website at www.cayugacounty.us/health.  Let’s work together to get the lead out!
