In a recent announcement, Senator Helming and Assemblywoman Byrnes revealed the honorees for Women's History Month, selected from their respective districts. The Legislative Women's Caucus, a bipartisan group consisting of members of the New York State Senate and Assembly, chose individuals who embody this year's theme of "Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion."

Senator Pam Helming's pick for honoree from the 54th Senate District is Ellen Bennett, a dedicated volunteer at Special Olympics New York. Described as an exceptional advocate for the Special Olympics movement, Bennett's efforts to expand opportunities and programs have not gone unnoticed. Betsy Mihm, Director of Program for the Genesee Region of Special Olympics, praised Bennett's energy and commitment, stating, "Ellen Bennett is an amazing advocate for the Special Olympics movement."

Senator Helming commended Bennett for her tireless work, emphasizing her role in making New York State more inclusive for individuals with intellectual disabilities. He highlighted Bennett's dedication as a coach and mentor, ensuring that every athlete is supported and included in the programs.

Assemblywoman Byrnes, representing the 133rd Assembly District, honored Dr. M. Fernanda Astiz, the Mount Morris Library Director. Astiz, a native of Argentina and a naturalized U.S. citizen, is recognized for her efforts in promoting intercultural dialogue and understanding through library initiatives. Assemblywoman Byrnes expressed her admiration for Astiz's commitment to the Mount Morris community, praising her for creating a welcoming and empowering environment at the library.

The honorees' photos were showcased in the New York State Capitol during March, and they were invited to a reception at the Governor's mansion to celebrate their contributions to their communities.

The recognition of Ellen Bennett and Dr. M. Fernanda Astiz serves as a testament to the impactful work being done by individuals in New York State who advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion in their respective fields.
