Senator Pam Helming presented Bob Ohmann with a New York State Senate Commendation Award in recognition of his commitment to the community of Lyons and the Finger Lakes Region. The Commendation Award honors individuals who exemplify the spirit of community, philanthropy, and leadership.
The presentation was part of a celebration commemorating the 110th anniversary of the historic Ohmann Theatre in Lyons.
The theatre first opened on December 6, 1915, as one of the largest movie houses in Upstate New York. It was initially operated by founder Burt Ohmann and later by his sons Robert and Myron. In 2005, Robert’s eldest son, Bob, brought the theatre back into the family and led its complete reconstruction, including upgrades to projection, lighting, surround sound, and seating.
Senator Helming stated, “The Ohmann Theatre is a true community treasure, and so is Bob. A philanthropist who has stood not only as a legacy to the Ohmann family and their admirable stewardship of this historic business but also as a legacy to the people and community of Lyons, Wayne County, and the recreational and cultural economy. Bob is someone who always looks for opportunities to inspire and lead others.”
Bob Ohmann added, “The theatre has always been a special place for me. I grew up selling popcorn and tickets at the landmark Ohmann Theatre built by my grandfather. I wanted to give something back to the town and keep the theatre open. A lot of first dates happened in this theatre; people always stop to share their memories."
