Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan has announced that seven public libraries in Assembly District 131 will receive approximately $938,124 in state aid for library construction. This funding is part of the $34 million allocated for public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects in the FY2023-2024 State Budget. The funds aim to support various projects, including roof replacement, installation of alternative energy resources, new HVAC systems, windows, doors, lighting systems, electrical upgrades, electric vehicle charging stations, standby generators, and parking lot construction or replacement. Broadband infrastructure projects are also eligible.
Gallahan expressed his satisfaction with the allocation: “I am very pleased to announce these funds being allocated to so many public libraries in our community—they will make a big difference.”
A survey highlighted a significant need for library construction and renovation across New York state amounting to over $1.75 billion. More than half of New York's 1,000-plus public library buildings are over 60 years old; another third are more than three decades old. Many libraries face challenges such as accommodating users with disabilities and providing internet access due to outdated wiring.
“Thanks to these funds, much-needed construction, renovation and improvement projects are underway in our public libraries. I am looking forward to seeing them completed in the near future,” Gallahan concluded.
Looking ahead to FY2024-2025, the Legislature has increased funding by $10 million from the previous fiscal year to $44 million for upcoming projects set to be announced in summer 2025. This increase reflects ongoing support needs for libraries statewide.
