The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) recently circulated a memo indicating that 70% of its original staffing model is now considered the full staffing level. This decision has sparked criticism from various quarters, including Senator Helming, who described it as an "unacceptable response" to the current conditions in state correctional facilities.

Reports indicate an increase in violent incidents within these facilities, raising concerns about safety for both staff and inmates. A notable incident involved a female officer at Groveland Correctional Facility who was assaulted by an inmate while on duty. Shortly after, Collins Correctional Facility in Erie County experienced a lockdown due to inmates taking control of dorms, resulting in injuries to multiple staff members.

Senator Helming emphasized the need for increased staffing and improved safety measures. She noted that her colleagues in the Republican conference have proposed several legislative measures aimed at enhancing security within correctional facilities. These include repealing the HALT Act, implementing stricter security protocols, and addressing contraband issues.

Furthermore, Senator Helming supports legislation offering state corrections officers a 20-year retirement option similar to those available to other law enforcement personnel. She believes this could help attract more applicants and strengthen the workforce.

Senator Helming urged the Governor and Legislature to act decisively to address chronic understaffing and ensure safety for both corrections staff and inmates.
